A Unique Collection of Artists’ Hands
George Wittenborn (1905–1974), a New York art bookseller and publisher, played an important role in the artistic scene of his time. In his guestbook (1944–1974), he gathered from contemporary artists an extraordinary number of drawings, prints, collages, and photographs of their hands.
This group portrait of George Wittenborn alongside the artists of his time was later expanded by Ronny Van de Velde with dozens of contributions from contemporary artists.
Today, this exceptional collection includes nearly 300 artists’ hands, both well-known and lesser-known, including: Pierre Alechinsky, Arp, Baldessari, Louise Bourgeois, Calder, Chagall, Raoul De Keyser, Marcel Duchamp, Max Ernst, Jan Fabre, Arshile Gorky, Jan Hoet, Asger Jorn, Axel Katz, Le Corbusier, Lichtenstein, Man Ray, Miró, Motherwell, Claes Oldenburg, Panamarenko, Raveel, Dieter Roth, Ruscha, Rob Scholte, Thomas Schütte, Richard Serra, Tapiès, Luc Tuymans, Henk Visch, Warhol, Erwin Wurm…
